Strand Process

Mixing strands of bamboo with a low-VOC adhesive, Plyboo® Strand™ is manufactured using high levels of compression. With all strips oriented in the same direction, the shredded bamboo mass is thrashed and then, under extreme pressure, compressed by 75 percent to yield high-density planks. After a kiln-drying and milling process the planks are sanded and finished, giving them their trademark Plyboo Strand® look.

Using Strand

At 2600 psi, twice as hard as red oak, strand flooring is the hardest bamboo flooring on the market today. Plyboo® Strand™ is particularly suited for commercial use but is also popular among homeowners for its warm and natural aesthetic. Available in flooring planks as well as plywood, Plyboo® Strand™ can be cut and laminated using conventional equipment and adhesives, and will sand and finish like other hardwood flooring and sheet good products.

The core of our Plyboo® bamboo plywood is made of strips that are laminated together then set perpendicular to the face veneers. We use a hot press process, low/no VOC adhesive for this. We laminate the face veneers in the same way. The core ply and the two surface veneers are then assembled using a cold press process with a no VOC adhesive. The finish sand on our standard 3/4" x 48" x 96" sheet is 160 to 180 grit. The moisture average is 8 to 10 percent. Plyboo® is easily milled... We recommend raw linseed oil for great results on the amber color and water-based polyurethane or a non-yellowing clear coat allows the Natural style bamboo to retain the unique light blond shade. In addition to both an amber and natural color, Plyboo® bamboo plywood is offered in a flat grain and an edge grain look.

Durapalm®

Durapalm® comes from plantation grown coconut palms, which are in abundance throughout much of the world. Palms produce nuts for up to 80 years, and then non-producing palms are removed and replaced. Coconut palm lumber can vary greatly in color and density. Smith and Fong uses only the hard, dark palm for their look and durable surface. As the rainforest continues to be tapped for timber needs, coconut palms have been an overlooked and under utilized resource. Smith and Fong hopes that through their work, palm will one day be recognized as a valuable building resource and help reduce rainforest harvesting.

This material is a flat grain or vertical grain palm facing on a bi-directional core of solid palm. DuraPalm® sheets come pre-sanded, unfinished and are easily milled with standard wood cutting tools.

Standard Bamboo Flooring 5/8" plank

Plyboo offers panels and flooring in two colors, amber and natural. The amber color is derived from a heat treatment process that gives it a darker tone. The lighter color is the natural color of the bamboo, and this goes through a bleaching process to achieve a more consistent tone. All of the strips are kiln dried, then sanded before the lamination process begins.
